This video from How Stuff Works provides a brief history of LED. A man named Nick Holonyak Jr. is credited with developing the light-emitting diode in the middle of the 20 th century. An LED light is comprised of diodes—or simple semiconductors—made of aluminum gallum arsenide, along which electrons can flow more efficiently than the filaments of traditional incandescent lightbulbs. LED bulbs last much longer than incandescent bulbs and don’t get nearly as hot, making them very popular among consumers.
