As you browse lightbulbs at your local grocery or hardware store, you’re bound to see a group of bulbs labeled “LED.” LED, which stands for light-emitting diode, is a relatively new type of lighting that is slowly replacing traditional incandescent lightbulbs. This video from How Stuff Works provides a brief history of LED. A man named Nick Holonyak Jr. is credited with developing the light-emitting diode in the middle of the 20 ^th century. An LED light is comprised of diodes—or simple semiconductors—made of aluminum gallum arsenide, along which electrons can flow more efficiently than the filaments of traditional incandescent lightbulbs. LED bulbs last much longer than incandescent bulbs and don’t get nearly as hot, making them very popular among consumers.
